Usually in a poker room, there will be a cage near the table, you give them the money and get your starting stack there. The dealers don’t have a ton of chips at the table, since the players are playing against each other.

As far as how much at a table, then totally depends on the stakes you are playing.

The No Limit tables will have a maximum that you can bring to the table. Might be 300 at a 1/2 table. Ask before you buy in.

If you’re looking to play limit, the rule of thumb is to buy in for 40 times the big blind or more. That’s $160 at a $2/$4 table, $240 at a $3/$6 table, and $400 at a $5/$10 table.

If you want to play no limit, ideally you should buy in for the table max and have four more max buy-in’s in your pocket. At a $1/$2 NL table the max buy in (here anyway) is usually $200. That means you should take $1,000 with you to the casino. I think $500 is plenty for most people though. I wouldn’t suggest much less though, since a couple bad beats could wipe you out.

Good luck and have fun.
